Exceptional talent from the start
Born in Beijing in 1987, Yuja started playing at the age of six and studied at the Beijing Conservatory, before moving to Canada.
Winning the Aspen Music Festivale concerto competition at 15, her professional career began while she was still a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
Her international breakthrough came in 2007 when, at just 20 years old, she replaced Martha Argerich as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a performance that catapulted her to global recognition.
Her repertoire spans from baroque to contemporary music. Yuja is passionate about classical music of all ages, from Scarlatti to Ligeti and everything in between. In 2009, she signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, leading to a series of acclaimed albums. Her recordings have garnered multiple awards, including five Grammy nominations and her first Grammy win in 2024 with The American Project. Yuja regularly collaborates with many of the world’s top orchestras and conductors, including fellow Rolex Testimonees Gustavo Dudamel and Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
In recent years, Yuja has continued to push boundaries in classical music. In 2023, she performed all four Rachmaninoff piano concertos plus the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in a single marathon concert at Carnegie Hall, a feat that showcased her extraordinary stamina and artistry.
