Tom Watson
A golfing legend
Tom Watson is a revered figure who has carved out a remarkable legacy in world golf, earning acclaim for his precision, strategic play and sportsmanship.
A legacy of excellence on the course
Tom Watson won eight major championship titles in total, but it was at The Open, where he lifted the famous Claret Jug five times between 1975 and 1983, that he built his legend.
His enduring prowess is further reflected in his 31 other wins on the PGA TOUR® and 14 victories – including six senior majors – on the PGA TOUR® Champions, underscoring his position as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Resilience all the way to the top
Tom Watson’s golf journey began in Missouri, where his talent emerged early. Having turned professional in 1971, he secured his first victory at the 1974 Western Open.
Over his career, he would go on to win 39 PGA TOUR® titles, displaying a consistency and resilience that set him apart. Beyond his success at The Open, Watson claimed Masters Tournament titles in 1977 and 1981, and achieved victory at the 1982 U.S. Open, showcasing his versatility across the sport’s most challenging courses.
A six-time PGA Tour Player of the Year, Watson’s achievements have secured his place among golf’s elite. His career was defined by remarkable victories and unforgettable moments, including his famous “Duel in the Sun” with Jack Nicklaus at the 1977 Open Championship, a battle that remains one of golf’s most celebrated events. The success Watson had at this particular major is fitting for a player whose respectful demeanour aligned perfectly with the essential spirit of Open Championship golf. Watson also made his mark in team golf competitions, as a four-time Ryder Cup player and captain of the victorious U.S. team in 1993, demonstrating his leadership and winning mentality.
Watson’s influence extended beyond his PGA TOUR® career. With more than a dozen victories on the PGA TOUR® Champions, he has further enhanced his legacy. His commitment to golf also took form in his work as a course designer, while away from the sport, he has been actively involved in raising funds for research into motor neuron disease.
In recent years, Watson has joined fellow Rolex Testimonees Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as an honorary starter at the Masters Tournament, a long-standing tradition taking place every year prior to the start of the major’s opening round.
