A journey to tennis elite
Born in Greece, Maria Sakkari was destined to have a successful career in tennis.
As the daughter of a former women’s top 50 player, she was immersed in the sport from an early age. Sakkari turned professional in 2015 and quickly ascended the WTA rankings. Her breakthrough came in 2018 when she reached her first WTA Tour event final in San Jose and broke into the world’s top 20. Known for her powerful serve and exceptional fitness, Sakkari has become a formidable presence on tour. Her career highlights include reaching two Grand Slam® semi-finals in 2021 – at Roland‑Garros and the US Open – achieving a career-high ranking of World No. 3 the following year, and being the first Greek player to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals, doing so in 2021 and 2022. Sakkari has claimed two WTA singles titles and consistently performed well in prestigious tournaments. She boasts multiple victories over players ranked in the top 10. Off the court, she is known for her intense work ethic and mental toughness, as well as her role as an ambassador for Greek tennis. As she continues to compete at the highest level, Sakkari aims not only for personal success but also to inspire the next generation of athletes.
