Protecting our water
After many perilous expeditions, explorer Steve Boyes and his team have proven that the Angolan Highlands are the source of the great Zambezi River. With Rolex’s support, he is using these findings to secure real protections for this vital area.
At the Ramsar Convention on wetlands in Zimbabwe, Steve Boyes, the founder of the Great Spine of Africa series of expeditions, stood in front of kings, dignitaries and global leaders to share an incredible finding: the primary source of the Zambezi River, which sustains millions of people and extraordinary wildlife, is in the Angolan Highlands. There, mountainous wetlands known as “water towers” act as sponges that feed trickling streams, which eventually converge into the rushing torrents of the Zambezi River. The finding is the culmination of more than 50 gruelling expeditions traversing thousands of kilometres of previously uncharted waterways, tracing the Zambezi back to its very beginnings.
