Extraordinary track record

Sir John Young “Jackie” Stewart, born in Scotland, is a legendary figure in motor racing.

His career is marked by extraordinary success and a profound influence on the sport. He won the FIA Formula One World Championship™ on three occasions (1969, 1971, 1973) and secured 27 victories in 99 Grand Prix starts, an impressive win rate of more than 27 per cent. The title of his autobiography, Winning Is Not Enough, reflects his approach. “These words represent the central theme of my life,” he says. “They fully reflect the pursuit of excellence, the occasional satisfaction of success, the frustration of defeat and the constant hunger to prove myself.” However, his most enduring legacy stems from his tireless advocacy for safety in motor sport.

Motivated by personal experiences and the loss of several friends on the track, Stewart campaigned vigorously for improved safety measures from the late 1960s onwards. His efforts, often met with initial resistance, led to significant improvements in track design, medical facilities and driver equipment. In recognition of his contributions to motor sport, Stewart was knighted in 2001. Sir Jackie Stewart’s impact on racing is immeasurable, having not only excelled as a driver but also fundamentally transformed the sport’s approach to safety and professionalism.
