2016: Career-defining year
Angelique Kerber’s tennis journey began in Germany, where she honed her skills from a young age.
Turning professional in 2003, she steadily climbed the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, with her breakthrough coming in 2011 when she reached the semi-finals of the US Open. Kerber’s dedication paid off with a career-defining year in 2016 when she won her first Grand Slam® singles title at the Australian Open and claimed the crown at the US Open later in the year. At age 28, she became the oldest player to make her debut as World No. 1.
Kerber’s triumph at The Championships, Wimbledon, in 2018 not only completed her collection of Grand Slam® titles on two different playing surfaces but also solidified her status as one of the most versatile players of her generation. Between 2012 and 2018, she was a model of consistency, winning more matches than any other WTA player and finishing in the top 10 of the WTA Rankings for six years out of seven.
