The Next Gen sensation

João Fonseca, an 18-year-old Brazilian tennis prodigy, has rapidly transitioned from being the world’s top-ranked junior and 2023 US Open boys singles champion to making history on the ATP Tour, becoming the second youngest player to reach an ATP 500 quarter-final and the first player born in 2006 or later to win an ATP Tour main draw match.

Meteoric rise

At just 18 years of age, Brazilian phenomenon João Fonseca has already made history and shown hints of a brilliant career ahead.

Born in 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Fonseca’s tennis journey has been nothing short of meteoric. He dominated the junior circuit, claiming the 2023 US Open boys singles title and reaching the final of that same year’s Australian Open boys doubles event. His prowess earned him the world’s top junior ranking by the end of 2023. Fonseca’s transition to the professional tour has been equally impressive. In February 2024, he became the youngest player since Alexander Zverev to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP 500 event, doing so at his home Rio Open. The run included his maiden ATP main draw victory and first win over a top 50 ranked player, Arthur Fils. These performances propelled Fonseca to turn professional. With a powerful game built on aggressive baseline play and a two-handed backhand, Fonseca is making rapid progress up the world rankings. As he continues to develop under the guidance of coach Guilherme Teixeira, Fonseca represents not just the future of Brazilian tennis, but looms as a potential star on the global stage.

João Fonseca became a Rolex Testimonee in 2024.
