Charting a course

Paul Cayard began sailing at a young age, quickly showing a natural talent for the sport.

His early accomplishments in competitive sailing set the stage for a distinguished career. Cayard made history as the first American skipper to win the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1997-98 with EF Language. His success in offshore sailing is complemented by his achievements in the America’s Cup, where he has competed in seven campaigns, reaching the finals twice. Cayard’s versatility extends to other prestigious events, including international match racing and world championships, as well as the Olympic Games. He has won seven world titles in total, including the 1988 Maxi class world championship. His strategic acumen and leadership have earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Cayard continues to compete in Star class events and is president of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association.
