The Open

Celebrating tradition, overcoming the unexpected

It is the world’s oldest golf championship. It is also the final men’s major of the season. The prize is the coveted title of “Champion Golfer of the Year”.

Founded in 1860, The Open is held annually in the United Kingdom on a rotation of links courses, and by definition, always by the sea. Representing a real return to the roots of the sport, it takes place in often changeable weather conditions. To be crowned champion at The Open means defeating the world’s finest players while taming the elements, which can be as challenging as they are unpredictable. The 2025 edition is held at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.

The Open, the first championship in golfing history, is held in the United Kingdom on links courses, which provide a particularly gruelling test and by definition, are always located on the coast.

The original trophy

The famous silver Claret Jug is not the only prize at this iconic tournament. The player who triumphs at The Open is awarded the title of “Champion Golfer of the Year”. Organized by the R&A, The Open traditionally returns to the historic St Andrews course every five years. Rolex has been Official Partner of The Open since 1981 and its clocks adorn the exceptional venues that host the championship each year.

If you’re going to be a player that people will remember, you have to win The Open at St Andrews.

The weight of history, the vagaries of the elements

Formidable links courses. Often challenging conditions. Winning this championship means grappling not only with the weight of history but also the force of the elements. Lifting the iconic Claret Jug has been the crowning achievement for some of the game’s greatest players, including Rolex Testimonees Tom Watson, Tiger Woods and The Big Three – Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

It may be years before I fully appreciate it but I am inclined to believe that winning The Open at the Home of Golf is the ultimate achievement in the sport.
